A Day of Love, Health, and Hope in Honduras

On Friday, something beautiful unfolded in the communities of Tronconeras and El Sauce. Hundreds of children gathered with excitement and wide smiles as they received presents—simple gifts that carried a powerful message: you are seen, you are loved, and you matter.

For many of these children, the joy of receiving a gift was more than a moment of happiness. It was a reminder that hope can arrive in tangible ways, even in places where resources are limited and daily life is often difficult.

Caring for Families Through Health Support

Alongside the children’s celebration, we focused on supporting mothers and families through practical care. Mothers were given deworming medicine and vitamins to help strengthen their children’s health and wellbeing. These small but essential resources play a vital role in preventing illness and supporting long-term growth, especially in rural communities where access to medical care can be limited.

Health is foundational to a child’s ability to learn, grow, and dream—and it was an honor to walk alongside these mothers as partners in caring for their families.

Love That Leaves a Lasting Impact

What stood out most was the joy—bright smiles, grateful hearts, and a deep sense of connection. Every visit like this becomes an experience of love, not because of what is given, but because love is what is shared. Love shows up in a child’s smile, a mother’s relief, and a community standing together in hope.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared their love, generosity, and prayers to make this day possible. Your support reaches far beyond a single moment—it continues to shape lives, families, and futures.

Together, we are bringing love to every child and every family we serve.

Giving Thanks For Denny and Southern Heights Church

We are deeply indebted to Denny Boersema and Southern Heights Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for their ongoing partnership with Gathering Hearts for Honduras.

Denny has faithfully invested in our teachers—training, encouraging, and walking alongside them in both their professional growth and their walk with the Lord. Since many of our teachers are not professionally trained, having Denny—a seasoned educator—pour into them has been an incredible answer to prayer. In his own words, “I spent a lot of time one-on-one with the teachers about their teaching habits.”

But Denny’s impact goes even further. He has built meaningful relationships with both teachers and students, inspiring them to pursue education and deepen their faith. Over the years, Denny has made 31 trips to GHH—helping with construction, teaching in our church (Templo Evangelical Emmanuel), and equipping young people with skills they might otherwise never have the chance to acquire. Truly, his sacrificial time and commitment are a treasure to this community and Gathering Hearts for Honduras.

          We are also grateful to

, food has been delivered to remote villages—many of which are home to our church plants. Meeting these physical needs opens the door to share the hope of Christ, as the love of Jesus is shown in both word and action.

In June, a mission team from

Christ Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, OK

returned to Honduras—many of them veterans of past trips—to serve both medically and spiritually in the villages. Their hearts for the people of Honduras were on full display as they poured themselves out through long hours of ministry, even serving one day without power.

Some team members ventured out to a remote, impoverished village to bring medical help and the message of Christ. Others stayed behind to treat patients at our mission center. Everywhere they went, they carried the Gospel.

Each person who came through our medical clinic heard the plan of salvation. Many accepted Christ—and we now have a growing list of new believers.

The young people with the team didn’t just assist—they led. They shared their testimonies in classrooms, played with children at the sports park, and boldly witnessed to patients and families. They also served alongside the medical team, supporting wherever needed.

I am so blessed by the warm and gracious people that we encountered. It is a joy to work as a team to serve in the medical clinic, sharing not only medicines, but love and kindness. Our young translators have been a delight and show a care for the people beyond their years. Several have returned to translate for us multiple times. Our week is intense, but Gary and Cheryl have worked to provide air conditioned lodging and delicious food so we are very comfortable! Our fantastic team was excellent always helping wherever needed. It is a very special place and I look forward to serving here again.

The people of Honduras are beautiful. Going into houses and seeing how they utilized what they have was inspiring and so beautiful. There was not a single face I saw that I didn’t see the image of God. From the sweet little babies, to the lady who had great English from working at the docks, to Brenda, the one that broke my heart. I’m so grateful to you Cheryl and Gary and the mission’s workers for making that Image known to the Hondurans and the work you guys do for His kingdom.

For me as a doctor much of the healthcare needs are just like the US, but every trip there are one or two children who needed a miracle and I had the privilege of bringing it. God does that and He lets me be a part of it. All praise to Him! Thank you Gary and Cheryl for the incredible investment of your lives here and the invitation to come join you!

God is moving in powerful and personal ways across Honduras—and your prayers and support have helped prepare the way. In this special update, we want to share a story of true Kingdom partnership: from a visiting mission team faithfully sharing the Gospel one-on-one, to a local discipleship team returning to help new believers grow in their faith. It’s a beautiful picture of the body of Christ working together, and it’s only the beginning.

Memorial Heights Baptist Church from Claremore, OK, was a true blessing to our ministry. Their recent trip wasn’t about crowds—it was about personal connection. This team journeyed into remote villages, sharing the Gospel face-to-face, one person at a time.

One of the most powerful tools we’ve seen for reaching the next generation in Honduras is the sports park. By inviting neighborhood youth to play soccer, we’re opening the door to much more than a game—we’re introducing them to the Gospel.

Many of the young people who come to the sports park have made personal decisions to follow Christ through these outreach events. Over time, these young converts have become the a vital part of our Village Ministry efforts. They now help lead church services, organize youth meetings, and support local churches.

TEE Team: Discipling the New Believers

Evangelism is just the beginning. Under the leadership of Pastor Nelson Osorto, our TEE team is returning to the villages to disciple those who recently came to Christ.

Through home visits, Bible studies, and spiritual guidance, they’re helping new believers grow strong in their faith—rooted in God’s Word and ready to share it with others. We’re seeing the early signs of lasting transformation, and we know God is just getting started.

As a result, over 100 villagers made personal decisions to follow Christ—the fruit of months of prayer and preparation. These were no chance encounters, but divine appointments made possible by your faithful support and intercession.

From village paths to ocean shores, the Memorial Heights Baptist Church team made an eternal impact during their mission trip to Honduras (May 29–June 5). Through evangelism, worship, and baptisms, lives were changed, faith was strengthened, and the Gospel was proclaimed in powerful ways. Here's a look at how God moved throughout the week.

We’re filled with joy and gratitude as we share an exciting update from the mission field in Honduras. From May 29 to June 5, a passionate mission team from Memorial Heights Baptist Church joined us on the ground—and their week was nothing short of Spirit-filled.

The team hit the ground running

, visiting small villages like Tronconeras, Chameleconsito, Campo Verde, Casa Azul, Campana, and Puente Alto—bringing encouragement, prayer, and the Gospel to families and pastors in each community. They preached in churches including Iglesia de Dios, Espíritu Santo Church, Alfa y Omega Church, and Templo Evangélico Emanuel.

          Friday night

, we held a powerful open-air gathering at the sports park on the Gathering Hearts for Honduras campus, where several churches worshiped together in unity. Mr. Allen Siemiars boldly shared the Gospel while others knelt in prayer. What a sight to behold!

One of the most moving moments came Sunday

, June 1st, as we gathered for a baptism service on the beach. Three new believers publicly declared their faith in Jesus—a beautiful reminder of why we do what we do.

Throughout the week, evangelism continued in remote areas, and the church was strengthened. The light of Christ is shining brighter in Honduras, thanks to your prayers and support.

Holy Week in Honduras: Hearts Touched by the Passion of Christ

In Honduras, Holy Week is one of the most sacred and widely observed times of the year—celebrated with as much reverence and cultural significance as Christmas.

Schools and businesses across the country close for the week, allowing families and communities to reflect on the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

At Gathering Hearts for Honduras, we paused our normal class schedule to honor this meaningful week. Instead of classroom instruction, we hosted three special viewings of The Passion of the Christ—a powerful and emotional portrayal of Jesus’ suffering and crucifixion.

For many of our students, it was the first time they truly experienced the weight and reality of the sacrifice Christ made on our behalf. As they watched, some were moved to tears. The emotional response was profound—and even more moving was the eternal impact: several students made the decision to accept Christ as their Savior.

This is what Holy Week is all about. Not just remembrance, but transformation.

We ask you to pray with us for these new believers—that their decision would take root and grow. Our team is inviting them to join our discipleship program, where they can be nurtured in their faith, grow in God’s Word, and become equipped to live out their calling.

Thank you for standing with us. Your prayers and support make moments like this possible—moments where eternity touches earth, and lives are changed forever.

A Legacy of Ministry: From One Man’s Faithfulness to a Church on Mission

For more than twenty-five years, Gary has walked faithfully from village to village, door to door, person to person—bringing not only the message of Christ, but genuine care for the everyday needs of the people.

Gary's ministry has never been about passing through quickly or checking a box. Instead, Gary has made it his mission to know the people, understand their struggles, and walk with them through life’s challenges.

Whether it’s helping a family through a health crisis, encouraging a single mother, or simply sitting and listening to a neighbor in distress, Gary’s compassion has built lasting trust. His willingness to be present in both spiritual and practical ways has opened hearts to the Gospel in a powerful and lasting way.

One touching moment this year was when Gary visited an elderly villager he has known since the beginning—someone who recently had a partial foot amputation. Gary wasn’t just there to pray; he was there to offer comfort, encouragement, and a reminder that she is seen and loved.

Now, that same heart of service is growing.

Pastor Nelson Osorto has picked up the baton. Following Gary’s example, he has committed himself to the same kind of relational ministry—being available, approachable, and deeply engaged with the needs of the community. More than that, he is training his congregation to step into this calling, encouraging them to be the hands and feet of Jesus in their own neighborhoods.

Pastor Nelson recently shared a moving reminder of the urgency behind this mission. “Yesterday morning, we visited and prayed with a man in the hospital. He passed away the very next day,” he said. “Praise God, he made his decision and came to Jesus. The family asked us to hold a service last night, and I also preached at the cemetery this afternoon.” These moments are powerful reminders that we never know when our visit may be someone’s last opportunity to hear about Christ.

Gary experienced something similar—not long ago, he visited a woman in a neighboring village. The very next day, she passed away. It reinforced a sobering truth: we must take advantage of every opportunity to share Jesus.

What began as one man’s faithful outreach has become a multiplying movement of compassionate ministry—meeting needs, changing lives, and drawing hearts closer to Christ.

On April 6, Temple Evangelical Emmanuel joyfully marked its 14th anniversary—a moment to celebrate all God has done and reflect on how far we’ve come. I couldn’t help but think back to those early days when only a handful of us gathered each Sunday. At the time, we had no idea that we were laying the groundwork for what would become a vibrant, growing congregation that now fills the sanctuary with worship and praise.

This year, I sensed a renewed urgency to empower the church body. Rather than relying solely on Pastor Nelson, Gary Kuney, or the leadership team, I challenged the members to see themselves as vessels—fully capable and called to share Christ within their own villages. Our focus shifted toward mobilizing the congregation to bring the Gospel to their neighbors, to step into the calling we all share as believers.

Gary and Cheryl carry a deep sense of urgency for church members to take personal responsibility for evangelizing their friends and family and reaching their village with the hope of Christ. Their passion is a reminder that the Great Commission is for all of us.

Step out in faith. Share your story. Be the light.

The response has been deeply encouraging. Many who only recently came to faith are now boldly going out to share the Good News. Watching them embrace this mission with passion and joy has been a powerful reminder that God doesn’t call the equipped—He equips the called. What a blessing it is to witness this new wave of evangelism, led by ordinary people stepping into an extraordinary purpose.

On March 31st, 2025, something incredible happened at Gathering Hearts for Honduras—a team of 10 dentists, 4 nurses, and a sterilizer came together to host a full-day dental clinic, treating 89 patients who otherwise would have gone without care.

This life-giving event was organized by Consuelo, our amazing ministry nurse, who coordinated every detail to ensure things ran smoothly. From check-ins to cleanings, extractions to follow-up care, the team worked tirelessly with compassion and excellence.

In the communities we serve, access to dental care is extremely limited. Many of our patients had never seen a dentist before. But thanks to this dedicated team, they left with cleaner teeth, less pain, and brighter smiles—not just on their faces, but in their hearts as well.

          The Heart Behind the Mission

Each year, the children of Campana, Honduras, experience the joy of Christmas thanks to the unwavering dedication of Callie Farish and her sister, Laura Keys. Their efforts have become the driving force behind nearly 1,000 Christmas gifts delivered to the children in this impoverished community, bringing light and love to families in need.

Mobilizing a Community for a Greater Cause

Callie and Laura, despite their full-time jobs, academic commitments, and responsibilities as mothers, have gone above and beyond to make this mission a reality. With hearts full of compassion, they have mobilized Christ Presbyterian Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma, along with other generous supporters, to collect, package, and prepare these Christmas gifts. Their dedication is a testament to the true spirit of giving.

          The Logistics Behind the Generosity

A crucial part of this mission is the support of Tom Hagen, a longtime friend of the Kuney family, who has been responsible for shipping goods for Gathering Hearts for Honduras for the past 25 years. His commitment to ensuring these gifts reach their destination is invaluable. This year, despite unexpected delays at the dock that resulted in daily fees as cargo was processed, the shipment arrived just in time—one day before Tom himself landed in Honduras.

The timely arrival of these gifts was nothing short of divine intervention. It allowed Tom and Janet, along with Mike and Janice, to be personally involved in distributing them to the children. Witnessing the joy and gratitude of these young recipients was a powerful reminder of the impact that love and generosity can have, even in the most challenging circumstances.

This incredible effort would not be possible without the selflessness and dedication of Callie, Laura, Tom, and the countless individuals who contribute to this mission. Their work is a reflection of Christ’s love, reminding us all of the importance of giving, especially to those in need.

As we reflect on this year's Christmas outreach, we are filled with gratitude for the hands and hearts that made it possible. Gathering Hearts for Honduras continues to be blessed by supporters who believe in the power of generosity, and we look forward to many more years of bringing hope to the children of Campana.

February was an exciting month for Gathering Hearts for Honduras! We had the incredible joy of welcoming four of our longtime board members—Tom and Janet Hagen, along with Mike and Janice Fellman—for a special visit to Honduras. Their timing couldn’t have been better! Not only did they get to experience our ministry firsthand, but they also arrived just in time to help us distribute long-awaited Christmas gifts to children in need. Plus, we kicked off a brand-new school year, welcoming fresh faces and growing our community. Come along as we share the highlights of this unforgettable week!

A Christmas Miracle: The Gifts Arrive Just in Time!

If there’s one thing we know, it’s that God’s timing is always perfect! Since December 24th, we had been waiting (and praying!) for a shipping container filled with Christmas gifts and much-needed supplies to be released. Finally, after nearly two months of delays, extra fees, and countless prayers, the container arrived—the day before our team and board members landed in Honduras!

Can you imagine the excitement? Tom, who had worked so hard to ship these gifts, finally got to see the fruits of his labor. He, along with our team, hand-delivered presents to children in remote villages—many of whom have never received a Christmas gift before. The joy on their faces? Absolutely priceless. It was a moment of celebration, gratitude, and pure Christmas magic (even in February!).

This year, nearly 200 students are enrolled, and here’s the best part—every class is an opportunity to share the Gospel. Already, we’ve seen students come to Christ, and discipleship groups are forming to help them grow in their faith. Education at GHH is about so much more than books and lessons; it’s about equipping students with knowledge, skills, and most importantly, a deep understanding of God’s love.

For over 30 years, Tom and Janet Hagen and Mike and Janice Fellman have been dear friends and devoted supporters of Gathering Hearts for Honduras. As board members for the past 25 years, they’ve helped guide and grow this ministry—but this trip was extra special.

During their time in Honduras, they didn’t just observe the ministry; they jumped right in! Here are some of the incredible things they got to be a part of:

They cheered on our students at the year-end graduation ceremony—such a proud moment!

           Teaching & Encouraging:

Tom and Mike shared an uplifting Sunday morning message in the community of TEE.

Janet and Janice led a discipleship class for junior high girls and ministered to the TEE women’s group.

They also trained our church members on how to share their faith with others, equipping them to spread the Gospel in their own communities.

           Building Lasting Connections:

Meeting the people behind the ministry was life-changing for them. As Janice beautifully put it, “We all really enjoyed meeting the people there. Our hearts are definitely drawn more to pray and care for each of those we met.”

Moments like these remind us that Gathering Hearts for Honduras isn’t just about programs or projects—it’s about people, relationships, and faith in action.

Nelson Osorto and Gerzon Lainez met overwhelming challenges including strikes, blocked highways, and drivinh seven hours in the middle of the night to arrive at the embassy in the capital of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. Praise the Lord. they arrived on time for their appointment to be approved for visas to the U.S. so that Gerzon could be fitted with a prosthesis. If they missed this appointment, they would not get another opportunity until 2026. Thanks to Jerry Morris of Bridge Builders International., and Senator Lankford of OK, for expediting these visas.

After begging on the streets if San Pedro Sula, Gerzon finally got enough money to buy a prosthesis only to find out it did not work.

I wish I could list each of the twenty-three team members and report all that they did. There were various ministries happening simultaneously all throughout the compound. Under the leadership of Lucinda Keilbarth and Dr. Wendy McConnell, this CPC team was the most versatile team we have ever hosted. Medical treatment, youth rallies, women’s Bible study, and pastor’s training, were all going on simultaneously. In fact, there is so much to cover with this team, another update will be coming out next week featuring the youth team and pastor's training.

Dr. Christopher Stokes, Dr. Wendy McConnell, Dr. Sylvia Ruiz, and Dr. Jeremy Brennan treated hundreds of patients in the Mission Center, and after hours they went into the villages to provide medical care for the invalids. Under the direction of CPC Mission director, Dave Oxenham, and others prayed for and shared the plan of salvation to each patient. As a result, there were many new converts added to our growing number new believers this year.

Over the ten years that I have gone to Gathering Hearts to provide medical care for Honduran children, I have witnessed remarkable changes in the small community around the mission. New homes have been built, children are fed and educated, jobs have been provided, and most dramatically in the last year, a soccer field draws hundreds of children and teens to a safe space where they can do what they love most. It is a light in the darkness; a city on a hill. Excuse me, on a rice paddy. In the last few years God allowed COVID and terrible floods to come. I certainly don’t understand all the reasons why but I do know that He shone a bright light on the love that holds this community together and they extended it to their neighbors in those difficult days. People were rescued and food and shelter provided. Now the church is bursting with life and the prayer and rejoicing are powerful. As a board member of GH I get to participate in decision making and planning for the mission. But there is nothing like being there and seeing God at work, both in the team of which I am a member, and as a sister in Christ of the beautiful community that is Gathering Hearts.

Included on this page are submitted testimonies from the MHBC team that came to the ministry in March of 2024. They spent the week visiting homes, sharing in schools, and conducting VBS. We are so thankful for what God did through this team!

“This was our first evangelism trip with a mission center for a home base, so we didn’t know what to expect. It was nice to be picked up at the airport eliminating the stress of locating this beautiful mission center. We were pleasantly surprised with the security, cleanliness, and comfort, including air conditioning in bedrooms as well as the dining room. From the moment we arrived, we were treated like family by Gary, Cheryl, Grant, and the entire team of Honduran family who work for the mission center. The food was well above and beyond our expectations as Mrs. Cheryl is a professional hostess. It is also clear that she is like a mother to all the Honduran’s who work in and around the center.

That being said, the most wonderful thing about our experience with Gathering Hearts for Honduras was the benefit of their 25 years of loving service to the community, which created a very welcoming response to our visits. It is evident that Gathering Hearts and TEE have become a beacon of light for Jesus to the area. Brother Gary, Sister Cheryl, and Pastor Nelson from TEE all have a tender heart for the people in Honduras and are clearly there to serve them and share the love of Christ in word and deed. There were many members from TEE who were ready to love and serve their neighbors alongside us.

Seeing how Gary and Cheryl have truly lived by faith and fully relied on God to provide for all their needs is very inspiring and a testament to Gods promises. God has clearly called them to this mission and has blessed Gathering Hearts for Honduras in an amazing way, some of which will not be revealed until we are all called home.

The Honduran people were so polite and welcomed us into their homes. It was refreshing to share the Gospel with so many people who were open to listening and discussing Gods love. The harvest was great, and we were so blessed to work side by side with our new Honduran family.

As I told the story of salvation, they quit working and listened intentionally to everything I said. All 4 prayed to receive Christ. It is so refreshing to see people that are willing to listen to the gospel and then repent of their sin and trust Christ.”

Last week was one of our most successful times of evangelism with hundreds of people coming to the Lord Jesus Christ. Memorial Heights Baptist Church of Claremore, OK, came with a passion for souls. Despite this heat, the team of nineteen divided up with our church people from TEE and canvassed the villages going door to door and person to person, just like Gary has done for years. The exciting difference is this canvasing was multiplied by nineteen! I can’t help but believe that this rich harvest of souls was the result of six months of praying. The members of TEE brought names of people that they knew who did not know Christ (226) and they were posted on a tree in the church. Each name was prayed for for months. Pastor Nelson Osorto organized all the names geographically along with the person who brought those names. The members from TEE accompanied a Memorial Heights Baptist team to visit all these people. There were hundreds of salvations that were documented. Bob Howell, MHBC Children’s Minister, also went into the schools and many of those students responded to the Gospel. The team held a Vacation Bible School in the afternoons at our campus with ninety-eight children attending. We hope to incorporate some of their program into our Children's Ministry.

The Memorial Heights Baptist team spent hours in prayer for souls to be saved leading up to their arrival. The TEE church joined with the team in the call to prayer in anticipation of the team coming. During an all night prayer meeting being held at TEE, one of the young men in the church texted some young men who had participated in our soccer outreach at the Mission Center. These young men were on their way to a disco party in the wee hours of the morning which usually means drinking and/or drugs. Our young man asked the group of men to drop by the church. They "dropped by” the church and ended up coming forward for Christ.

Christ Presbyterian Church was so kind to donate over 600 Christmas gifts to the children of Honduras! However, due to unforeseen shipping issues, there was a significant delay (and cost) in receiving them. The container eventually made it to us and we were able to distribute the gifts. Our focus was two-fold: to make sure the children receiving the gifts heard the Gospel, and to make sure the poorest of kids received gifts. Praise God we were able to accomplish these goals! We made stops in Tronconeras, El Sauce, and Las Urupas. These are generally poor colonias. All the children that received presents were so thankful! We still have some more gifts and plan to distribute them next week in 6 de Mayo. Below are some photos from the wonderful day! Click to expand.

It is a thrill to start a new year of classes here at Gathering Hearts For Honduras. You can see from the pictures we have a great turn-out this year. Due to the heavy rainy season from November to February, most schools in Honduras start in February and end in November. Our classes have grown over the years from a handful of students to now 217 students; in addition to our junior high and children’s programs. Many of the students have not had the opportunity to hear the Gospel and to accept Christ. It seems the Lord has brought the “fields that are white already to harvest” to us.

As you know, we normally do not let our needs be known, unless it concerns the people themselves. Thus, we are sharing a financial need for our local children. We try to scholarship needy children in our community to a private school where they can receive more care and higher education. Some of these children have been abandoned or have special needs. They also begin their classes this month. It costs $850 a year for one scholarship. We would appreciate you considering sponsoring one of these children, pictured below.

Denny, an educator from Kalamazoo, MI, is helping to orient these new students as well as continue to train our teachers. Denny also preaches on Sunday mornings the “Simple” Gospel to help new Christians, understand the Bible and incorporated into their lives.

Our "anchor holds” here in northwest Honduras despite the financial challenges we face. In fact, the ministry continues to grow. As our ministry scripture says, “look on the field for they are already white for harvest.” We have seen a rich harvest of souls this year.

The sports park evangelism has opened up a brand new avenue of reaching the unreached. Discipleship classes are ongoing with those who have received Christ. We’re blessed to have Grant Beirute to help lead this evangelistic effort and disciple young men.

Our church, Templo Evangélico Emanuel, is growing as well as the four church plants. TEE remains to be a house of prayer with nurturing the body of Christ, baptizing the new converts and being a hub of humanitarian care.

The 200 English, Bible, and computer students hear the gospel in every class with our pastor, Nelson Osorto. Our six English and computer teachers continue to uphold the standard that Denny Boersema, an educator from Kalamazoo, Michigan, has taught them.

This year, Christ Presbyterian Church provided a medical brigade. Six hundred people were seen and witnessed to. They brought our first American youth group to minister with us in the sports park. A special dedication service for the Dr. James Green Memorial Sports Park, featuring Betty Jo Green, was held while CPC was here. Under the direction of our in-house nurse, Consuelo, dental brigades with local dentists were held throughout the year. There were hundreds of needy patients seen.

With Thanksgiving approaching, there is much to be thankful for here in Gathering Hearts for Honduras. This year, we have had more converts than in the past twenty-four years, Grant Beirute has come along side us to be in Honduras while we itinerate in the states, Templo Evangelico Emanuel has grown exponentially to the point we now need buses to help transport, four church plants are active, discipleship groups are thriving, Denny Boersema has been invaluable in training English teachers, and you, the donors, have helped to make this possible. It is apparent that God has His hand on the ministry. Praise our Almighty God.

It is great to be back in Honduras with our Gathering Hearts family. Honduras has started the rainy season. We have had torrential rains since we arrived and, our workers are telling us it has rained like this for weeks. As a result, there are local people flooded. Flood relief and food distribution is part of the ministry for these people who have no or little resources.
Today is the last day of regular classes. Graduation will be November 28. Meanwhile, we begin interim classes over the Christmas break through January. With each student, there is a potential salvation opportunity. It is hard to turn students away due to lack of space, or lack of enough teachers.

This year we are thrilled with the new converts, and we will have baptisms November 26th. Praise God that some of them will be these young people who came to Christ through sports evangelism.

This ministry began twenty-four years ago after seasons of prayer. We have found that anything started through the Spirit with prayer, needs to be sustained in the Spirit and prayer. With the establishment of our church, Templo Evangelico Emanuel, we wanted it to become a house of prayer. This is the only thing Christ said about the church-to become a house of prayer (Matthew 21:13).

October 28th, Pastor Nelson Osorto led the church in an all-night prayer vigil. The vigil included: special music, dramas by the youth, much prayer for the unsaved, prayer for the impact of the church, prayer for the Kuney’s, prayer for Gathering Hearts and prayer for Israel. When someone leads out in prayer, the whole church joins them aloud. What a powerful time of prayer the church experienced.

Most of Honduras is considered evangelized, however, there is still a darkness covering many in that Christ is a religion but not a live person to them. This country continues to be a hub of corruption, crime, and drugs.

Our church, Templo Evangelical Emmanuel, has always had a bold witness among the villages with their humanitarian aid, village evangelism, and church plants, but September 24, the Day of the Bible, Pastor Nelson Osorto and the TEE church took a bold move, and went out into the streets with posters, music, and preaching. Pastor Nelson Osorto led his congregation enthusiastically and his wife Sonia led the parade. The young people participated and show a desire and boldness to reach their own people.

While the ministry has been expanding in Honduras, Gary and Cheryl have had speaking engagements in churches with their short stint in the states. In seven to ten minutes, they can convey what God is doing in Honduras and glorify God with His provision and abundance of new converts. If your church or community group is interested in hearing about the ministry, we would love to share our story.

With the expanding opportunities in Gathering Hearts for Honduras, we, the Gathering Hearts Board, felt others would be interested in investing in the ministry's needs of which now has the responsibility of paying the salary of twenty-two Honduran teachers and employees. This runs around $8,574 per month. There is also a children’s feeding program and medical clinic, plus the monthly utility expenses. The total amount of funds needed each month is $25,000. Remarkably, this ministry has grown based on faith with few monthly commitments. The Board believes now is the time to give others an opportunity to partner and invest in the growth of God’s Kingdom in Honduras. This partnership would allow a more consistent basis for supporting the ministry. If you would like to join this opportunity and become a monthly investor in Gathering Hearts for Honduras, please email

Consuelo: GHH Clinic Nurse and Much More

Consuelo, our Mission Center nurse, has proved herself over the years to have a heart for God and a heart for her people. She not only runs the medical clinic, but is involved in nearly every aspect of the ministry. In July she organized a village wide dental brigade in the conference center. There is little or no dental care for the people that we serve here. As a result, people go with very painful, infected teeth that need to be pulled. Seeing the great need for dental care in our impoverished area, Consuelo set up a dental brigade with several dentists and dental interns. Gratefully the dental brigade saw and treated 105 patients. This not only helps the people, but connects us with dentists that could possibly help in the future.

Many times, Consuelo will accompany Gary and Nelson into those hot villages and provide medical care and pray for the patients who cannot get to her for medical treatment at the Mission Center. One such example is Gladys, who seriously injured her leg in a car accident and should probably have been hospitalized. Consuelo faithfully goes and treats Gladys, as well as others. The recent medical team from Christ Presbyterian Church calls her the General, and that she is. She takes command of any situation and makes it work.

Saturday began the regular tournament. We started small, with six teams that included some of the students of the English classes, youth from the church, and various players from surrounding villages. The Kuneys and Pastor Nelson shared with the crowd how thrilling it is to see this dream finally came true, and how the sports park has a dual purpose. It is for them to have a good time, but mainly so they can hear the Good News of Jesus Christ.

The enthusiasm was contagious! Pastor Nelson’s wife, Sonia, was the announcer and she was a pro. Christian music was blasted out into the air and trophies awarded to the winners.

Cheryl said, “As I look out over the compound right now, the sports park is in use with our children’s program. Yesterday the TEE youth met there. We knew the sports park would be used, but we could not have imagined the enthusiasm and just how thrilled these young people are to have a place like this to come and be a part of something bigger than they are.”

There has been a lot going on around the Gathering Hearts for Honduras compound these past couple weeks. In addition to the soccer tournaments, we have hosted all night church prayer vigils and are making extensive repairs to the facilities from flood and earthquake damage. It has been all-hands-on-deck for our 20 workers plus Gary and Cheryl.

This coming Saturday, November 12th, we will host graduation ceremonies for the English/Computer/ Bible Class seniors. This is the optimum time to reach the parents of our students and to share the gospel.

As most of you know, this ministry was founded on, and is sustained by, prayer and faith. We are so glad that Pastor Nelson Osorto is leading the church in the same direction. On October 29th an all-night prayer vigil was held…young and old participated in a praise service, sermons and prayer.

Cheryl gave the first message based on the Prayer of Jabez, using examples of how God has answered prayers over the past 23 years for this ministry. One of those more recent answers is the completion of the sports park. This is an obvious testimony of God’s provision and helps raise the faith of all who are watching. We had a packed house for the prayer vigil, visible evidence of the faithfulness of our church members. Some of the congregants had walked for 40 minutes from Las Urupas, where we have planted a new church, to participate at the main church. We pray that the seeds of prayer that were planted will bear much fruit.

What a challenging time we have experienced for the past two months. Since the beginning of December, Gary had surgery, Cheryl had a serious fall on the ice resulting in broken ribs and a collapsed lung, and our partner in the ministry, Tim Colwell, contracted Covid-19 and made his way to heaven on January 14. Yet, in all things we praise the Lord for He is good, and He alone is worthy of our praise.

It was in 2012, after speaking in the Carpentry Class at First Methodist Church in Tulsa that Tim came up to me, handed me a donation and said, “somehow I feel we will work together.” Little did we know, just how much that would come to pass

For the last five years Tim and Patty Colwell have worked alongside us. Tim has written our updates, including the hardcopy end-of-the-year report of what God has accomplished in the past year plus an additional mailing of a beautiful thank you card for our donors in 2020.

Tim has been to Honduras many times since his initial visit in 2013. He hiked into steamy hot villages with Gary, documenting the work with his photography (that’s why there aren’t many pictures of Tim in Honduras as he was always the photographer!) Upon returning to the U.S., he was always inspired to spread the word about the work of the ministry and truly gathering hearts for Honduras.

His care and concern for the poor was obvious. Because of his and Patty’s love for the people of Honduras and their desire to serve the Lord, there are a lot of little children that now have clothes, food, school supplies and even Christmas gifts.

Only in eternity will we know the impact that he has had on the lives of these people in Honduras. His humble, gentle spirit glorified God and made a lasting memory for those who were privileged to know him.

Answered prayers for Christmas for the children

You may remember the prayer request for Christmas gifts going into Honduras. Our prayers were that the Lord would provide a way to purchase Christmas gifts for the children there in country and make something special during this truly difficult year.

With the help of a family giving their Christmas budget to Honduras, plus Avery Johnson’s trip to Honduras in early December, our staff and volunteers were able to purchase gifts for the children and make Christmas very special for many.

Nicolas, Nelson, Sonia, Consuelo, Joel, Christiian, all of our staff members and volunteers, not only arranged to purchase the toys in the middle of a flood catastrophe, they even gift wrapped every single one! Then they carefully made the distribution to children throughout the villages.

The donor even specified that every staff member should receive a gift as well.

Despite the pandemic, Gathering Hearts for Honduras classes began February 10th. In Honduras, the school year runs from February until November due to the rainy season. As you know last November classes were cancelled due to hurricane flooding, leaving many in the villages we serve either homeless or in vast need of cleaning and repairs.

In 2021, all Honduran universities and schools are remaining closed until April unless they can provide virtual learning. We are grateful again to Denny Boersema who continues to teach some of those classes from here in the States.

For now, only 67 of the returning students are enrolled. Beginning students find it very difficult to learn in a virtual environment, yet we are hopeful those classes will begin again in April at the Gathering Hearts mission center.

Meanwhile, the classes for younger children and feeding program are ongoing and in person at the mission center. If it weren’t for the dedication of our workers, many of these children would not have food without this part of the ministry.

The medical clinic is also a necessity especially during this pandemic. Nurse Consuelo is continuing to monitor patients and dispense essential medications for those with high blood pressure, diabetes and other serious conditions.

Last November’s flooding left some of the area we minister, (Department de Puerto Cortes, Campana) in destitute condition. Many lost their homes and some lost loved ones. Gathering Hearts for Honduras fed 300-500 people a day throughout the crisis in three relief stations with the mission center as the base. Many of you helped to make this happen. We feel deeply for these people who are still trying to put their lives back together.

The COVID-19 numbers remain high in Honduras. Many are out of work and this especially affects the impoverished areas where we serve. We are grateful to the Lord, that we can continue the food relief program. As mentioned before, God has used this not only to draw people to the ministry and to Templo Evangelical Emanuel (the church connected to Gathering Hearts Mission), but it has also drawn people to the Lord. The church has grown during this time as people find that Jesus is the only answer.

To enable Pastor Nelson Osorto to spend more time meeting the demands of the church, we have hired a new lead teacher, Eva Orelllana. Eva has been a good student in our English classes for several years and has shown leadership skills. While Nelson will continue to teach the advanced class and lead the Bible studies while in session, this will free him to minister more to the people. His wife Sonia will remain an English teacher and has proven herself to be a faithful pastor’s wife as well. With so much need in the villages, they were working almost around the clock for weeks on end, and we are so proud of them.

  Dear Friends of Gathering Hearts,

I don’t think any of us could have predicted that the COVID-19 pandemic would be such a long siege. We pray against it with UNITE714, which has united Christians around the world to pray the same prayer twice a day against the pandemic. Ultimately, even though God uses doctors, nurses and researchers, it is ultimately He that will use this plague for His glory, to bring many to Him.

Gary and I are still quarantining in Tulsa, but that has not stopped us from being able to minister long distance. We’re so grateful for this digital era in which we live. Gathering Hearts’ supervisó, Nicolás, and our lead teacher and pastor, Nelson, are our capable hands and legs on-site there in the mission center and the villages.

The week before last we sent down to our church, Templo Evangelical Emmanuel, a Sunday morning message on Titus I and II. The scripture exhorts our brothers and sisters to remain faithful to the Lord, and faithful to reaching out to their brothers and sisters. We are seeing young converts come alive as they reach out to help others in their own poverty-stricken communities. It is rare for villagers to see the needs of others, but this pandemic is causing them to look around and to look up and seek God for protection and provision. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God and are called according to His purposes.” Romans 8:28

We are so grateful to so many of you and to Southern Heights Church in Kalamazoo, Michigan who have funded the bulk of the food relief program during the pandemic. As we had mentioned before, God is using this food relief outreach to bring people to the Lord and to the Gathering Hearts ministry. As our workers distribute food, we are also praying for each individual. This outreach has put Templo Evangelical Emmanuel church on the map in this area with a reputation for serving others. We provide food relief and services our church people, and to the poor in general, believers and non-believers, and members of other churches. And we have particularly emphasized finding the children who came to our ministry and the sick and elderly to assure they have provisions.

The people we serve are very poor and have very little resources. Most of them live day-to-day and as a result many of them, right now, are going without food. Honduras continues to be shut down; people are permitted to go out of their homes only two days a month. Many are out of work, and many without resources. At this time, the president of Honduras is hospitalized with coronavirus. Our workers in Honduras are telling us that more and more cases are showing up in the villages.

While we are so grateful for the help with food relief in the impoverished area where we serve in Honduras, please pray with us that we can also afford to pay our workers. Over the past 20 years God has been faithful, but, like many other ministries, we are facing a financial crisis. Like so many times in the past, just in time and not a day before, donations came in to make the payroll due today with $13 to spare. Our workers depend on us, and many people – not just their families – depend on our workers for their provision.

So you will know who you are praying for…this photo was taken of our entire staff, in uniform, just before the 20 year celebration in Honduras and right before we returned to the US for the 20 year celebration in Tulsa. We are so anxious to return. God is in control and teaching us a new thing!

Food poverty – living from meal to meal and often going without, is very real and common in Honduras. As a part of Gathering Hearts for Honduras one of the ways we show the love of Jesus to our community is by distributing food to those who are in great need.Below is a picture of Consuelo, our GH for H Nurse and a TEE church member distributing food and working in our community. Two doctors who have previously traveled to Gathering Hearts on medical missions helped us get a brochure to inform how to keep hand sanitized and stay protected during the current Covid-10 pandemic. Instructions were also sent down on how to make hand sanitizer from scratch.

We pray this update finds you all in good health and protected from the Coronavirus COVID-19. We also pray that God will draw people to the Lord at this time.

In the last update, we shared how a pandemic like this can hit a Third World country much harder than here in the U.S. In the rural area where we serve on the north coast of Honduras, testing is not available, so there is no way to be sure how many cases there are.

The Honduran government has put in place a mandatory shut-in; people are permitted out of their homes only one day a week to shop for groceries. In spite of this, Gathering Hearts for Honduras has been able to distribute food to the needy. Many of the people in the rural area have no food, nor the means to get it. As mentioned in the last update, there’s no such thing as stocking extra groceries, as they live pretty much day-by-day. This has given us a great opportunity to share the redemption of Christ, as we distribute food.

We are amazed how our church, Templo Evangelico Emanuel, has stayed connected during this time, having long-distance prayer meetings, Bible studies and communicating the needs between members. Nelson Osorto, our pastor, has done a marvelous job of rallying them together to help take care of their needs and others.

Since there is no hand sanitizer or masks in this area, we received a recipe to make hand sanitizer, along with a pattern to make masks. We pray our folks can find the sanitizer ingredients and fabrics for masks. And we are hopeful Consuelo can make and distribute the items.

We are so grateful to Denny Boersema, who stays in touch with the Computer/ Bible/English teachers, as well as several students. His idea of dividing the student body among the five teachers, so that they could call the students to check on homework, encourage them in the Lord, and share Bible study has been so productive. As we have mentioned before, many of the students have not excepted Christ yet, and this is another rare opportunity to share one-on-one. The coronavirus has gotten everyone’s attention; we know that God will use it and be glorified.

  Blessings to you!
